The Therapeutic Beauty of Art and Creativity

Recently, I have rediscovered my old sketchbook and filled it with new additions. I am not gifted at art, yet I still find joy in the therapeutic benefits of drawing, painting, and colouring. In fact, art is a great way of expressing creativity and calming the mind. Creativity reaps benefits beyond the work produced; it can foster healing, reduce stress and enhance mental well-being. For those who haven’t warmed to conventional meditation, it can be an excellent alternative. Let’s dive into the therapeutic beauty of art and creativity.

How it all began…

It all started when a friend recommended investing in a sketchbook, some colours and some paints. Since then, it has manifested into one of my favourite past times. I put one of my favourite playlists on in the background and I start drawing. Here are just some of the benefits I have discovered related to art and creativity.

Mindfulness and Presence

Getting creative has the power to take your mind off the burdens of everyday life; it clears your mind. Fully submerge yourself in your work as the concentration it requires will make it all-consuming. Give yourself the chance to be mindful and practice presence by focusing all your attention on your creative endeavor. Having a warm drink and some hygge lighting nearby really does do wonders for a relaxing, enjoyable ambiance too. Train your mind to focus on the present rather than falling into the habit of distraction.

Calm a Busy Mind

Art and getting creative, in general, are great ways to calm a busy mind. When you are feeling the burden of stress, anxiety, or worry, sometimes it’s necessary to change the channel. Don’t give way to the barrage of unhelpful negative thoughts that flood your mind; take control. It happens to the best of us. The good news is that the balls in our court. Learn to be proactive. So, pick a creative activity that brings you joy and let its therapeutic magic do the work. The end result is that you feel much more relaxed thanks to the meditative beauty of creativity.


This is an additional benefit that perfectly encapsulates the beauty of a creative hobby. I started out drawing basic sketches and, quite honestly, they were awful. Yet the more I practiced, the more competent I became. Physically, I noticed a bit more precision in my work whilst mentally I noticed a lot more optimism in myself. Like any skill, practice makes progress (perfect is way too ambitious for me). The results teach you that time, patience, and effort can go a long way.

Confidence and Achievement

We often underestimate ourselves. Naturally, this could be in any aspect of our lives, professionally as seen in the theory of imposter syndrome as well as in our day-to-day activities. Yet, by taking up a hobby, you produce results that drive you to continue to outdo yourself. Set yourself a creative project that excites you be it drawing, painting, cooking, and give yourself goals to work towards. If it’s cooking it could be some baking or if it’s art, why not test out a new technique. Make sure you find it enjoyable and congratulate yourself on your achievements, no matter how minuscule they may seem.

So, find a creative project from making a homemade gift to sketching and let the therapeutic beauty of art and creativity begin. Whether it’s to practice presence and clear a busy mind, or to show yourself what you are capable of when you put your mind to it, I sincerely hope you enjoy it.
